Taking the pretention out of specialty coffee, Tyler Wells, Michael Phillips and Chris Owens are the trio behind Handsome Coffee, a full-service roaster and coffee bar based in the arts district of downtown Los Angeles. With an impressive list of coffee credentials behind them, they’ve joined forces to provide hospitality, accessibility and uncompromising quality to the masses.

The menu options are limited but stellar, and their shop itself is an extension of their dedication to craft. They teamed up with fellow Angelenos, Woodsmithe, to create a welcoming atmosphere with a clear view of the process from delivery of the beans to the perfectly prepared cup of espresso.

Isn't this the same place that doesn't provide sugar to its customers? I'd say that's putting the pretension in.

Sugar tends to ruin speciality coffee. Not because it's so good on it's own, though it is. It's just a quirk of speciality coffee. Good wine is balanced on its own, and sugar would throw it off. So them not having sugar is a little like a hot dog stand not having maple syrup. It just doesn't go, there's no reason to have it there.
