Good Place to Gather: Outerlands, SF
Walking into Outerlands one rainy afternoon was like seeking refuge in an old boat docked at the harbor. Miles from the city, this community-driven, no-reservation restaurant evokes a feeling of history with its floor-to-ceiling wood paneled walls, rusted iron chains hanging haphazardly from the ceiling and concrete floors rich with patina. A basket of mismatched crocheted blankets welcomes you at the door, and everything from the dim lighting to the instrumental tunes playing overhead leaves you feeling like you’ve entered in to some kind of fairy tale.
This theme of simplicity is carried into the dishes they serve from the bustling open kitchen where diners can watch chefs chopping vegetables, mixing drinks and plating food with a perfectly undone elegance. Owned by husband and wife team Dave and Lana, Outerlands is open for lunch and dinner, offering creative concoctions ranging from fresh cavatelli with wild mushrooms and kabocha squash to salted caramel pot de crème topped with rosemary caramel corn (and order some of their famous levain toast with housemade butter while you’re at it). A must-stop for those residing in (or passing through) the city, but be sure to get there early; those cozy seats fill up fast.
